Job Description

Woodlake United Methodist Church, located in Chesterfield, VA (a suburb of Richmond), is seeking an experienced pianist for their Sunday Traditional Worship services. Responsibilities include supporting the church’s worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music and serving as accompanist for the Traditional Worship choir in regular and special rehearsals and performances. This position is an 11-month position (choir recesses each July).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support the church’s worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music presented by the choir and other musicians
  • Plan, select, and prepare preludes, postludes, offertories, and other special music according to the needs of the worship service
  • Serve as accompanist for the Traditional Worship choir in regular and special rehearsals and performances
  • Facilitate congregational singing and worship through the excellent execution of hymns and other songs
  • Serve as accompanist for other ensembles, and soloists, when needed
  • Play for weddings and funerals, as requested (and upon availability), being permitted to receive additional compensation from the parties involved
  • Locate suitable replacement when not available

Qualifications:

  • Degree in music, preferred
  • High degree of competence on piano to include sight reading, playing parts, and hymnody
  • Knowledge of the instrument and ability to play hymns and anthem accompaniments
  • Knowledge of music theory and ability to perform simple transpositions
