Job Description

Trinity Lutheran is a mid-size Evanston church with a mission of transforming lives through living the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are seeking a full-time Director of Worship and Music to aid this mission by guiding a robust music ministry that enriches the faith life of our congregation and shares the joy of the Gospel with our neighbors. The ideal candidate will bring together children, youth, adults, and our community through a variety of musical styles from traditional hymns and liturgy to more contemporary worship music. We currently have 2 vocal choirs, a bell choir, and a variety of instrumental soloists and other performances throughout the year. The Director will continue this rich music program while growing and adapting it to meet our changing worship needs, online, in person or hybrid.

The Director of Worship and Music is responsible for the following:

Plan and coordinate the entire music program in consultation with the pastor and lay worship teams. Provide worship and music education, leadership, supervision, and resources to other musicians, directors, and the congregation. This includes selection of hymns, psalms, liturgies, vocal and/or instrumental music, and musicians.

Direct and hold regular rehearsals with the vocal and bell choirs and instrumental ensembles.

Serve as the organist/pianist/accompanist for all church services and programs, including at Sunday worship services and designated non-Sunday services and programs.

Maintain professional musical competency by practicing, performing, and using available educational opportunities. Recruit and facilitate musical participation from all groups within the congregation.

Attend regular staff meetings and work with the Worship Committee and/or other congregational committees for short and long-term planning. In accordance with the mission of the church, collaborate with the Pastor(s), church staff, and other leaders to facilitate congregational goals and assume responsibility for tasks as mutually agreed upon with the supervising Pastor.

Administer the program, including managing the music budget, maintaining the church’s music library, supervising the maintenance of all instruments, coordinating musicians/guest performers or other performing artists, ensuring compliance with copyright laws and obtaining music use licenses.

At the Director’s discretion and with the additional compensation specified by the church’s then-current policies, play at funerals and weddings held in the church or approving (reasonably) the requested musician or substitute.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters degree or higher in Music, Music Education or equivalent degree/experience.
  • Performance level proficiency in piano and preferably organ as well.
  • Familiarity with Lutheran theology, liturgical practice and the use of music in worship.
  • Experience in directing music ensembles (vocal, bells, instrumental, etc).
  • Comfort in leading in a range of musical styles from traditional to contemporary worship music.
  • Interpersonal skills conducive to engaging people of all ages and skill levels in music ministry.
