The principal task of the Director of Music Ministries is to lead our congregation in the worship of God through the gift of music. This person will creatively develop and implement a church music program which connects the spiritual and educational needs of all age groups and is consistent with Christian principles as well as Wesleyan/Methodist doctrine.
The music ministry at Starkville First UMC is a major part of the life of the congregation. It includes an adult Chancel choir, as well as ensembles for women, men, and young adults. There is programming for children and youth as well as instrumental opportunities for brass, hand bells, and steel drums. A music team also leads worship at an offsite service.
The Director has direct responsibility for the preparation and leadership of adult choral music in two Sunday morning traditional worship services, as well as seasonal and special events. This includes working with the Senior Pastor in designing and scheduling worship services. This person also has supervisory and planning responsibilities for the staff and volunteers who work with the other music groups. They should have a broad knowledge of church music including traditional and contemporary forms.
Candidates must be committed to Jesus Christ with an appreciation of the mission and ministry of the United Methodist tradition. They should have a sound understanding of the role of music in worship and an ability to lead a wide range of musicians and music programs. This position is part of a multi-staff team and administrative skills are important. A Bachelor's degree in music and at least three years of choral work experience are required.
First United Methodist Church is an active, community minded, congregation which offers ministry encompassing children, youth, and adults. The average Sunday worship attendance is over 500 persons in two traditional and one contemporary worship service. The City of Starkville is a vibrant community and is home to Mississippi State University. We invite you to consider joining with us for the next phase of your ministry.
