Job Description

The Assistant Director of Music will serve Northside Church as part of a collegial and creative team through the advance of congregational song and the cooperative building of a unified ministry committed to worship education, musical training, and Christian formation for all ages. The Assistant Director’s primary responsibility will be designing, managing, and leading the children’s and youth choral programs in collaboration with the Director of Music and Children’s Music Assistant. This position assists with the organization and administration of all other aspects of the music ministries on an as-needed basis. This position may also assist with accompanying and/or directing the Chancel Choir as needed.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the developmental capacities of children
  • Knowledge and a fervent passion for working with youth
  • Teaching knowledge of the voice in a solo and choral context
  • Knowledge of and experience with a broad range of sacred music
  • Broad knowledge and experience in music education
  • Working knowledge of musical instruments, including handbells

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set goals and conduct or manage the Children’s and Youth Choirs (3-4yr, K-2 grade, 3-5 grade, 6-12 grade)
  • Foster an environment of Christian discipleship and weekly devotion
  • Serve as creative lead on annual Hanging of the Greens Service and Yuletide Reception
  • Serve as creative lead on annual Children’s Musical
  • Serve as creative lead on annual Youth Choir Tour
  • Coordinate with the Director of Children Ministries in order to build the children’s choirs
  • Coordinate with the Director of Student Ministries in order to build the youth choir
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director of Music (handbell director) on children’s music program
  • Collaborate with ensemble accompanists
  • Develop parental support and assistance for weekly and programmatic needs
  • Communicate regularly with families
  • Develop opportunities for church members to use their gifts and talents in the music ministry
  • Participate as a member of the Chancel Choir
  • Assist in planning and organizing special music events (i.e. concerts, choir tours, mission trips, retreats, festivals, workshops, clinics)
  • Detail and request financial needs to Director of Music
  • Track expenses and receipts with Director of Music and Music Administrator
  • Report directly to the Director of Music and respond to communications in a timely manner
  • Maintain and update and communicate programming calendar
  • Secure and send contracts to outside musicians and vocalists as necessary
  • Coordinate with Facilities on set up and repair needs
  • Coordinate with Production on audio and visual needs
  • Collaborate with Creative Services on print design and marketing materials for special events
  • All other duties as assigned by the Pastor, Executive Director, or Director of Music

Skills and Qualifications

  • Commitment to the Christian faith and its development in children and youth through music
  • Highly skilled choral conductor
  • Keyboard skills (piano and/or organ) preferred, but not required
  • High level of creativity and demonstrated ability in the area of traditional worship
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with people and groups of all ages

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music required, emphasis in Music Education or Church Music preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years of successful experience administering children’s and youth worship and music
  • Experience in the performance of church music
  • Experience facilitating the work of others
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel)

Salary of $50,000+ is negotiable and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, retirement, sick leave, and vacation.
