Job Description

Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC) in Worcester Massachusetts is seeking a Director of Music Ministry to lead in the planning, development, and implementation of the church’s ministry of music in light of its five areas of passion: Spiritual Growth, Welcome, Hospitality and Inclusion, Diversity and Multiculturalism, Mission and Outreach, and Lay Leadership Development and Empowerment.

Wesley UMC is a multicultural congregation in an urban ministry setting with a strong commitment to high quality worship and music. The successful candidate will have a strong Christian faith and understanding of the role church music plays in Christian formation. The successful candidate must have the ability to oversee a multi-faceted music ministry and to work collaboratively with the pastor, staff, and lay volunteers.

Knowledge and experience in both western music notation and tonic sol-fa are essential; strong organ playing skills and exposure to traditional, contemporary, and global worship music are integral.

The primary responsibilities for this position are providing music leadership for two Sunday morning services and special services, including rehearsing and conducting three choirs: an adult choir of the Ghanaian tradition that uses tonic sol-fa, an adult choir that uses western music notation, and an adult handbell choir. Instruments used in worship include a four-manual, six-division, 73-rank 1927 E. M. Skinner pipe organ; a two-manual electronic Rodgers organ; a nine foot Steinway grand piano; a Yamaha PSR-S950 electronic keyboard with rhythm tracks; and four+ octaves of Malmark handbells.

This position is for 30 hours per week. Salary and benefits are competitive. Benefits include health insurance, pension and continuing education allowance.
