Job Description

We are seeking an Organist to join our staff at Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond, VA. If you have a genuine calling and passion for music ministry, we would like to learn more about you.

The Organist serves as the primary keyboard musician for our two traditional Sunday morning worship services and our Wednesday evening service, as well as special services such as Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. The Organist also provides accompaniment for Chancel Choir rehearsals and concerts, plays service music for funerals as needed, and has first right of refusal to play for weddings.

Reveille has exceptional keyboard instruments. Our sanctuary houses a 38 stop, 3 manual Austin pipe organ built in 1954, which has been regularly maintained and substantially updated. The organ was re-leathered in 1999, with some tonal additions to complement acoustics in the sanctuary. Within the last year, the original keyboards were replaced with crushed ivory resin, the pedalboard was resurfaced, the 5 reed stops were cleaned and regulated, and an 8’ Trumpet was added to the Swell. As would be expected of an Austin, there are numerous pistons available, and there is a 75-level memory for piston setting. The organ console is housed on a platform which can be positioned in the center of the chancel for organ concerts.

In addition to the pipe organ, the sanctuary also houses a concert Steinway piano. This summer, a brand new Yamaha C3X was purchased for the chapel. Later this fall, we anticipate welcoming a Neupert harpsichord that is in excellent condition.

The qualified candidate will be proficient in organ and piano accompaniment, with five or more years of experience, excellent sight reading skills, and knowledge of sacred organ literature and the liturgical calendar. A master’s degree in music/organ performance from an accredited college or university is preferred. A successful background check is required prior to hire.

This is a part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), non-exempt, salaried position with limited benefits. Compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Our benefits package includes paid vacation, a 403(b) retirement plan with up to 6% match and continuing education support.
