Scripture: Luke 1:47-55
"And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord ...'"
(Luke 1:46, NRSV)
Regardless of whether your congregation will celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent using Mary's Magnificat (spoken or sung), it is fitting in our devotion and our work to remember these powerful words.
We are in a season of waiting not only for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day, but also for the fullness of God's plan to be accomplished. We wait for the reconciling of all creation, the "peaceful kingdom" as Isaiah described it in Isaiah 35:1-10.
We are not there yet. Even so, we boldly join Mary in proclaiming what God has done. We embrace her words as our words declaring the reign of God as a reality of and for today: "(T)he Mighty One has done great things for me ... has shown strength … has scattered the proud ... has lifted up the lowly ... has filled the hungry ..."
This is our Advent hope and joy!
O God my Savior, may the joy and power of what you have done, are doing and will do well up in me so that I must sing, dance, preach and rejoice! Amen.
