Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9
“... so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
(1 Corinthians 1:7, NRSV)
As usual, God’s grace sustained me during the hectic season of Advent, and there was enough left in the tank to experience meaningful services of Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord. Yet it’s about this time in the liturgical year when reality hits: Holy Week is right around the corner! Indeed, it’s about this time when I begin questioning whether my gifts and my endurance will be enough for the task ahead.
Paul reminds us, however, that the gifts are in abundant supply within the body of Christ. My gifts will only take my particular ministry so far, but the giftedness of those around me continues to exceed the limits of my imagination.
May we pause this day to discern the gifts of those with whom we share this ministry. Whose gifts have been on the shelf for too long now? How might the fast-approaching season of Lent find new meaning through the work of the saints in our presence?
God of all gifts, empower us with the gift of discernment. Flood the worship plans we make with the power of your Holy Spirit that we see – and so often fail to see – in others. Amen.
