Stephen Mitchell

The President-Elect presides in the absence of the President, meets monthly with the Executive Board and with Working Groups as needed, and appoints the Nominations Committee for the upcoming biennium.

Stephen Mitchell is in his 16th year as Director of the Athens Choral Society, a 90-voice, non-auditioned community chorus. A native of Pensacola, FL, Stephen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Birmingham-Southern College. Stephen was a Choral Scholar at Wells Cathedral in Wells, England from 1992-1996, where he sang daily evensong in the choir of men and boys, recorded several CDs, performed live radio and television broadcasts, and gave concerts throughout Europe, South America and the US. Active in many professional organizations, Stephen’s greatest love is serving The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. He has been the high school choir clinician for Music & Worship Arts Week at Lake Junaluska, and for six years served as the Design Team chair for MWAW. In addition, Stephen has served on the Design Team for the last five National Convocations, most recently coordinating reading sessions and exhibitors. The Fellowship is Stephen’s family, and it was at the 2011 Convocation in Colorado Springs where he met his husband, Greg Kirby. They have been married since 2016, and used candles from the closing service of the 2011 convocation as part of their wedding ceremony.
